Moses Kuria Acquitted of Assault Charges Against Journalist

Gatundu South Member of Parliament Moses Kuria was on Thursday, July 22, 2021, acquitted of Assault Charges levelled against him.

Milimani Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku declared the verdict after the complainant Joyce Wanja Gacie withdrew the charges she had pressed against the lawmaker.

“I allow the request by the complainant and withdraw the charges against the accused MP Kuria under section 204 of the Criminal Procedural Code(CPC) and order the cash he deposited in court be refunded,” Justice Mutuku ruled.

Appearing before the court, Wanja stated that her decision to withdraw the charges against Kuria are personal, and refused to disclose.

She also noted that she was not coerced or paid off to end the case.

“I have not been forced or coerced in any way by the accused (MP Moses Kuria) to have me withdraw the matter”, Wanja stated.

She had accused the legislator of assaulting her in December 2019 while at the Royal Media Services premises.

Wanja had alleged that the MP kicked and punched her after she asked him to retract some of the sentiments she made regarding women during a function held in Kiambu.

“Whatever he said about women was demeaning and the remarks were made in the presence of children, that is why I told him to rethink and retract them, but instead he attacked me,”  she had alleged.

Kuria was arrested on January 20, 2020 and taken to the Kilimani Police Station but was later released on a Ksh20,000 cash bail.
