The Government has announced plans to expedite the construction of modern markets in Gikomba and install CCTV cameras. 

Addressing the Press on Friday 6th August 2021, Interior PS Karanja Kibicho stated that the Government would work closely with the leadership to create access roads for faster deployment of emergency services.   

"PS Karanja kibicho has said the government will expedite construction of modern markets in Gikomba to relocate open air traders and install an integrated CCTV camera system throughout the market to end to frequent fire outbreaks.

"The government will also work closely with market leadership to create access roads for faster deployment of emergency services," Part of the statement by interior ministry read.

This comes hours after property of unknown value went up in flames on Friday morning following a fire that razed down a section of Gikomba market.

Reports indicate that the fire started at around 3 am on Friday at the women's clothing section in Nairobi's largest second-hand clothes market.

Fire tragedies are not new to Gikomba market and are seemingly an annual occurrence. 

In 2020, a section of Gikomba market was torched again with Government requesting the business community volunteer information to help bring the culprits responsible for the frequent arson cases in the Market to book.
