According to matatu operators chair Jamal Ibrahim, the government has neglected the matatu industry by failing to ease guidelines imposed on the sector amid the corona pandemic.

Matatu operators in the country have announced that there will be a nationwide strike from Tuesday next week over neglect of the industry by the government.

In an interview with NTV on Sunday, matatu operators chair Jamal Ibrahim accused the government of neglecting the matatu industry by failing to ease guidelines imposed on the sector amid the corona pandemic.

A couple of months ago, the government directed matatu operators to reduce their carrying capacity to 75% in amid to enhance social distancing and prevent further spread of the corona virus.

However, as the government has been easing other measures set back then, nothing has been announced regarding the matatu sector.


Matatu operators accuse government of negligence

According to Jamal, matatu operators have written to the government severally airing their grievances but the government is yet to respond.

Jamal further noted that the lack of response from the government has left them with no other option than to call for a nationwide strike effective on October 27, 2020.

“Wameneglect hii industry yetu ya matatu, wakienda kila mahali wanongelea pikipiki, mabar, makanisa lakini industry ya matatu wameisahau kabisa.

“On Tuesday Kenya nzima matatu zote lazima zitagoma. Tumewaandikia mabarua za kutosha na kucomplain ya kutosha kwa kuwa tumesahaulika, sai mahali imefika imebidi tuweke mgomo on Tuesday sababu tumesahaulika,” he said.
