  • Nyeri MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has said Friday August20, 2021; the date when BBI Appeal was  dismissed, could go down in history as the day DP Ruto ‘lost’ his 2022 presidential bid.

Nyeri Member of Parliament Ngunjiri Wambugu has claimed that Friday, August 20, 2021; the date when the Court of Appeal dismissed the BBI Appeal, could go down in history as the day Deputy president William Ruto ‘lost’ his 2022 presidential bid.

According to Wambugu, the DP had better chances of becoming President had the Court of Appeal overruled the High Court decision on the BBI Bill.

In a hypothesis posted on his Facebook page, Ngunjiri argued that with the nullification of the BBI, DP Ruto now has one Executive Position (Deputy Presidency) to use when scouting for votes from the different regions in the country.

“The collapse of BBI means that Ruto now has only one Executive position to negotiate with for political support from other regions. This position - the Deputy Presidency - must go to the region he expects to get the highest votes from. We all know that the region Ruto is depending on for that high vote is Mt Kenya,” he said.

He argued that the nullification of the BBI appeal complicates the DP’s game plan, as he now has to decide which region to give the Executive position, in exchange for their support in the 2022 General Election. According to Ngunjiri, if DP Ruto gets this math wrong, then he has not shot at the presidency.

“Can he really offer Mt Kenya the DP slot? I doubt he can. This is because if he offers Mt Kenya the DP position he will lose all his other allies from other regions, as they will rebel against the historical significance of another Kalenjin/Kikuyu ticket. But if he doesn’t and I don’t see how he can he stand to lose a significant portion of the diehard Mt Kenya vote that’s currently with him., starting from the current TangaTanga leaders around him.

“Ruto needs a large portion of the Mt Kenya vote to win. Will he offer them the DP? Does he have something else to offer that could convince them their interests are safe with him, as he has someone next to him watching over them? Meanwhile whoever and I mean whoever offers No 2 to Mt Kenya if Ruto doesn’t will get a large portion of what Ruto will lose,” he opined.

Meanwhile, the Court of Appeal on Friday upheld a High Court decision declaring BBI Bill unconstitutional.

The ruling means that it is highly likely that Kenyans will go to the next election with the current Constitution as it is since it is now impossible to have a referendum and make changes to the Constitution before August 2022.
