The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has condemned a violent attack on politician Jimi Wanjigi while he was on a tour of Migori County.

On Friday afternoon, Wanjigi was addressing a gathering in Migori town before a section of rowdy youth pelted stones at him, forcing him to cut short his speech and leave the town.

Reacting to the incident, ODM appealed for calm and urged all its supporters across the country to accommodate all politicians despite their ideological and political standpoints.

The party also called upon the police to investigate the matter and apprehend perpetrators of the violence.

“We have learnt of unfortunate incidents of Violence in Migori involving Mr. Jimmy Wanjigi. The Party takes this early opportunity to condemn the incidents and urge for tolerance & accommodation of every political view. We urge Police in Migori to ensure culprits are brought to book,” ODM said.

Weighing in on the matter, ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna noted that he’s requested for a detail brief from the Migori office regarding the violence against Wanjigi.

“My office is in contact with the @TheODMparty office in Migori for a full brief on reported cases of violence targeted at one of our members Mr. Jimmy Wanjigi. I have also tried to reach Mr. Wanjigi on phone to confirm he is OK. Full brief to follow,” Sifuna said.

On his part, Minority Whip in the National Assembly Junet Mohammed condemned the incident and called upon the police to take immediate action.

He further politicians to adhere to the set Covid-19 guidelines regarding public gatherings in order to prevent further spread of the infectious disease.

“I call the police to thoroughly investigate this incident and bring all concerned to the firm grip of the law. I also urge aspirants to respect government public order and public health protocols as we continue to fight coronavirus pandemic,” Junet said.
