During the interview, Odinga was notified that residents of Meru have raised concerns that the government had done little in helping them trace their son.

Responding to the question, the ODM leader appeared not to have understood the question and claimed that Mbijiwe is dead.

However, it is understood that the former premier might have been referring to late former Cabinet Minister Gilbert M'Mbijiwe Kabere, who passed away in 2017.

"Mzee Mbijiwe alikua rafiki yangu na kwa hivyo mimi niliskia vibaya sana alipoaaga na hio ni kitu kidogo kwa serekali. Nitaongea na Rais Uhuru ili aweze kusaidia," Odinga stated.

Speaking to a local daily, Mbijiwe's family stated that the ODM leader may not have understood the question and instead talked about Gilbert Mbijiwe Kabere.

"Odinga and Kabere were friends. He met my brother Mbijiwe through Kabere. I'm not sure but that is what we see," Tamara Mbijiwe, the sister stated.
