Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai has been appointed to a continental role.

The IG will serve as President of the Bureau of Afripol General Assembly that will run for the entire 2022 period.

Mutyambai was elected to the role during the 4th Afripol General Assembly held virtually on October 20, 2021. The meeting was attended by 115 participants from the AFRIPOL Member States and cooperating partners.

The IG assumed the helm, representing the East Africa region, with 1st Vice President coming from Cote d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) and representing West Africa; 2nd Vice President from the Republic of Congo representing Central Africa); 3rd Vice President from Botswana (representing South Africa); and Rapporteur from Algeria (representing North Africa).

Following the election, Mutyambai expressed gratitude to the other member states for granting Kenya the opportunity to lead and assured them of his commitment to the success of the vision of AFRIPOL.

AFRIPOL (Africa Police), modelled on the philosophy and practice of UNPOL (United Nations Police), is a structured cooperation of AU Member States law enforcement aiming to promote democratic policing values and attendant policing good practices amongst members.

Priority areas for AFRIPOL cooperation are transnational organized crime, counterterrorism, cyber crimes and other emerging modes of criminality.

IG Mutyambai will now have oversight and a hand in decisions and plans undertaken by AFRIPOL.
