The United States Embassy in Nairobi has announced that it will be conducting a joint readiness exercise to build Kenya’s counter terrorism capabilities on Saturday October 30.

According to a statement from the embassy, this will be the sixth exercise conducted by Kenya and the United States to build counter terrorism capabilities.

The embassy further noted that the exercise will be attended by representatives from the Department of State’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security and the Kenyan government.

According to the embassy, the exercise will cause traffic disruptions in areas around the US embassy.

“There will be simulated explosions, smoke, blank gun fire, fire, and traffic disruptions in the areas surrounding the U.S. Embassy and Rosslyn Academy from 10 am to 3 pm,” the embassy’s statement read in part.

The announcement comes one week after the US issued a level 2 travel advisory against Kenya.

In the advisory, the US urged its citizens to exercise caution while travelling to Kenya due to “COVID-19, crime, terrorism, health issues, and kidnapping.”

“The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has issued a Level 2 Travel Health Notice for Kenya due to COVID-19, indicating a moderate level of COVID-19 in the country. Your risk of contracting COVID-19 and developing severe symptoms may be lower if you are fully vaccinated with an FDA authorized vaccine,” the advisory read in part.

Additionally, US citizens were warned not to travel to the Kenya-Somalia border and some coastal areas due to terrorism, areas of Turkana County due to crime, and some sections of Nairobi due to crime and kidnapping.
