Mount Kenya University has honored the third president of Kenya, Mwai Kibaki, with a convention center named after him.

The Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government, Dr. Fred Matiangi, commissioned the convention center on November 4 as the chief guest.

The Multi-million infrastructure is set to attract tourists in terms of convention meetings while promoting common interests.

Matiangi was delighted to note that the students chose to have the convention center named after the retired president.

"I will mobilise my colleagues as the prefect of the cabinet to respond to these young learners on some of the decisions we have made as government in this convention," Matiangi stated.

The University management board had earlier requested students to recommend names for the ultra-modern convention facility.

The students then submitted five names, including Kibaki's name. The university management, in consultation with the university council, settled with honoring Mwai Kibaki.

"The Board of Directors as well as the entire Mount Kenya University fraternity are honoured to have Mount Kenya University’s ultra-modern convention facility named Mwai Kibaki Convention Centre," MKU Chairman Simon Gicharu indicated.

The chairman added that they settled on the name because Kibaki had given the university a charter.

"Part of the reason why the students chose the name Mwai Kibaki Convention Centre is because he is the one who gave Mount Kenya University its charter when he was head of state."

Matiangi added that he would use his immigration officers to look at the issues of foreign students studying at the facility.
