Police have arrested the main suspect in the sexual assault on a female motorist along Wangari Maathai Road, Nairobi.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Zachariah Nyaora Obadia was arrested near the Kenya - Tanzania border.
Obadia had been labelled by the DCI as Kenya's most wanted man.
"WE HAVE HIM. Zachariah Nyaora Obadia, the country’s most wanted suspect who has been on the run for sexual assault has been arrested. Obadia, who masterminded the ghastly sexual attack on a woman along Wangari Maathai road, has been arrested minutes ago at the Kenya-Tanzania," the DCI tweeted on Monday.
The DCI detectives believe that Obadia was attempting to flee to Tanzania after his manhunt was launched.
An earlier attempt by DCI sleuths to nab the suspect in Mukuru Kayaba in Nairobi went sideways after Obadia escaped through a sewer duct.
“Using digital forensics, the sleuths working with cybercrime experts at the DCI National Forensic Laboratory, placed the thug at the scene of the crime scientifically and went after him this afternoon deep in Mukuru Kayaba informal settlement,” tweeted earlier.
The suspect is alleged to be behind the violent attack on a Zimbabwean diplomat a couple of days ago, an incident that angered many Kenyans.
Obadia was positively identified in the video showing the barbaric incident, which later went viral. He will now remain in police custody awaiting arraignment in court.
