The launch was rescheduled due to late completion and publication of the Constitution Amendment Bill 2020.

The Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) signature collection launch that was set to happen on Thursday November 19, 2020 has been postponed indefinitely.

According to a statement by the BBI referendum national secretariat, the signature collection launch that was to be presided over by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his handshake partner Raila Odinga was rescheduled due to “late completion and publication of the Constitution Amendment Bill 2020”.

The secretariat promised to announce a new date one everything is in place.

Reacting to the postponement, Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen claimed that the move was meant to provide room for consensus.

“I congratulate President Kenyatta for against all odds/pressure postponing the BBI Signatures launch to provide room for consensus. This is the President I knew. Let’s now have meaningful engagement for win-win result. We only have one Kenya let’s listen to all voices,” he tweeted.

Last week, Odinga announced that the collection of BBI referendum signatures will start this week, effectively closing the door for any amendments.

“We will be doing the launch of the signature collection sometimes next week. We want that exercise to be done as soon as possible so that the matter can be handed over to the electoral commission, and then we can move towards the next phase of a referendum .

“This matter, as already mentioned before, should be concluded by latest April next year. That is where we are as far as BBI is concerned,” he said as quoted by Citizen
