Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko will now contest for the Mombasa gubernatorial seat in the August polls on a Wiper ticket.
Days after issuing a direct ticket to Kisauni MP Ali Mbogo, the Wiper party has now withdrawn the decision and brokered another deal between the legislator and Sonko.
In the new arrangement, Kisauni MP Mbogo will now deputize the former Nairobi Governor.
The negotiations were led by Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka. On April 6, the Wiper boss handed the direct to Mbogo saying he was the right candidate for the Mombasa gubernatorial seat.
The decision by Wiper now gives Sonko a major comeback in the political arena after he was ousted from Nairobi's top job in December 2020.
Questions of integrity arose after Sonko joined the Wiper party on March 25, with the ex-Nairobi boss having ongoing cases in court.
However, IEBC later clarified that politicians with graft cases in court would be allowed to run for elective posts in August.
The entry of the flamboyant politician into the Mombasa race now sets the stage for an exciting encounter after Mvita MP Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir was handed a direct ticket by ODM to run for the county's top seat.
