Eight robbery with violence suspects are on the loose after escaping from police custody, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has said.
In a statement on Thursday, May 12, the DCI stated that the eight got loose after a daring break out at Thika Police Station on Wednesday night.
According to the DCI, one of the escapees faked sickness as he complained of a running stomach. His accomplices pleaded with one of the police officers to accompany him to the washrooms.
“Little did the officer know that his prisoners had hatched a plot to escape from custody. No sooner had he opened the door than the nine escapees attacked him with blows and kicks, before forcibly taking away keys to the main door leading to the cells,” DCI tweeted.
Livingstone Njau, Francis Matheri, Allan Mugai, Charles Mitaru, John Murege, Eric Ngigi, Arthur Kayemba and Bunton Mbugua all broke out of the police cell.
However, the 9th prisoner, Joseph Nyaguthii, was rearrested by the police metres away from the station.
DCI sleuths are currently probing how the eight got loose from the highy-guarded facility.
The officer who was attacked during the incident is under police custody as he helps in investigations into the incident.
DCI asked the members of the public with information leading to the arrest of the eight suspects to report through the DCI anonymous toll free hotline, 0800 722 203.
