President Uhuru Kenyatta has hilariously revisited circumstances leading to the conception of the handshake initiative.
While speaking during the BBI signature launch initiative on Wednesday, President Uhuru noted that he defeated ODM leader Raila Odinga who was the NASA presidential candidate.
President Uhuru garnered the required 50% + 1 votes but lost at the Supreme Court. The Head of State, however, reprimanded Raila for running cold feet when it came to the presidential runoff.
“Nchi ilikuwa karibu kugawanyika nusu…mimi nilikuwa mstari wa mbele kuchapa hawa watu wa NASA, na nilifanya nikajaribu nikapata hapo 50+ lakini huyu (Raila) alikataa…tukaenda kortini akanilazimisha kurudia, nikarudia akatoroka,” ( The country was splitting into two...I defeated NASA by getting the 50+ 1 votes but Raila contesnted...we went to court and I was forced to go for a rerun but Raila ran away),” President Uhuru said.
The BBI signature launch initiative seeks to collect at least one million signatures to give room for a referendum.

During the event, President Uhuru was accompanied by Raila, where both leaders expressed their commitment to uniting the country.
Notably, Deputy President William Ruto snubbed the meeting for unspecified reasons.
Ruto is among leaders who have been calling for a review of the BBI contents before going for an opinion poll.
