The building had been earmarked for demolition by Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) before it caved in.
Kenha previously issued a notice of demolition of buildings along some parts of the Thika Superhighway to pave way for the construction of a dual-carrier road.
In October 2021, a nine-storey building that was under construction in the same region collapsed, but there were no causalities as there was no one inside at the time of the incident.
