Deputy President William Ruto has responded a story by The Standard newspaper indicating that he has been cornered in the BBI referendum push.
According to the story titled ‘Why Ruto is Cornered’, the DP is reported in a catch-22 situation on whether to support President Uhuru Kenyatta in his push to amend the Constitution, or whether to stick with his allies and oppose the document.
The article further argues that if the DP abandons his allies and supports the BBI team, his lieutenants will most likely ditch him ahead of the 2022 election.
On the other hand, the article argues that if he opposes the BBI referendum after praising some of the clauses it “is like throwing the baby out with the bathwater”.

According to the article, sitting on the fence is also not an option as the DP will be seen as a coward.
In view of the above, the article concluded that Ruto is cornered as all his options are critical and could have dire consequences on his 2020 presidential bid.
Reacting to the headline, Ruto laughed it off stating that it is not easy for him to be cornered.
He further noted that much improvement has been made to the BBI document adding that he’ll continue pushing for a consensus.
“Cornered?? Not as easy as you think my friends. Scaling the stairs while chewing gum we do without a problem. It’s never too late to do the right thing. Tremendous progress achieved. Consensus on remaining issues and process so as to have non-divisive vote best option,” he tweeted.
