President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed the Ministry of Health to source for the Covid-19 vaccine from China and other countries in Asia even as the search for other alternatives continues.

Addressing the nation on Monday, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe said the President has given a green light for them to explore other options including countries from the East.

According to Mutahi, the President gave the go-ahead on Monday during the National Emergency Response Committee.

“While Kemri continues to collaborate with AstraZeneca and Oxford University in the trials for this vaccine, the government remains open to other collaborative opportunities… In this regard, Kemri will collaborate with researchers from other countries such as South Korea, India, Singapore and China," he said.

The announcement, therefore, means that the China Covid-19 vaccine which is being tested in Egypt and Morocco can also be tested in Kenya.

Meanwhile, 302 people tested positive for the virus on Monday bringing to 83,618 the number of confirmed positive cases in the country. The cumulative tests are now 888,971.

Regarding recoveries, 369 patients have recovered from the disease, 287 from the Home-Based Care Program, while 82 have been discharged from various hospitals. Total recoveries now stand at 55,344.

Unfortunately, 17 patients succumbed to the disease bringing the cumulative fatalities to 1,469.
