The Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has stated that they will use the digital register but will have a paper register incase the former fails in the August polls.
At a press briefing on Thursday, IEBC commissioner Abdi Guliye said that the manual register would only be used when there is a total breakdown of the digital register.
“If and when there is a total breakdown of the KIEMS kit (electronic register), which means it cannot do anything, the alternative the commission provides is a substitution of that particular kit.
“We only revert to the paper register (manual) in the event that even the back-up kit has failed and there is no other alternative kits to be provided as a substitute,” Guliye stated.
This means that IEBC will have a physical register as an alternative incase a digital one fails.
The remarks by the IEBC commissioner come after the Azimo presidential candidate, Raila Odinga, on Wednesday insisted that the IEBC should have a manual register.
He said that the electoral agency should use both the manual and digital registers, maintaining that the matter was not negotiable for his party.
"A manual register is a must in each and every polling station, it's not negotiable. We’re telling the IEBC they must have a manual register along with biometric identification of voters on that day; failure to which, there will be no election," Raila stated in Kiambu County.
IEBC had insisted on using the digital register of voters in the August polls in a bid to guard against malpractices witnessed in the 2017 general election.
