Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has congratulated Mombasa ODM Gubernatorial candidate Abdulswamad Nassir.

This is after preliminary results showed that Nassir would trounce UDA's Hassan Omar to win the Mombasa gubernatorial race.

Provisional results showed that from five of the county’s six constituencies, Nassir was leading with 101,658 votes while  Omar had 88,352 with Likoni pending.

In a message via social media platforms on Tuesday, August 30, Sonko thanked his supporters who voted for Hassan Omar in Monday's by-elections.

The former Governor also stated that "When you are in any competition, your competitor is not your enemy but your opponent."

"Congratulations Abdulswamad Sharrif Nassir for your win as the second Governor of Mombasa we live to fight another day. I would also like to thank all our supporters for believing in us and voted for our candidate Hassan Omar Sarai, despite the loss let's remain strong and even more united as we shall always be there for everyone of you even those who never voted for us.

"I shall as well continue to support you all in my own little capacity and that of my Sonko Rescue team. God bless the great people of Mombasa, God bless Kenya. May peace continue to prevail in our beloved country Kenya. Nawapenda nyote kuweni na siku njema. Asanteni sana," part of the statement read.
