The Azimio candidate has bowed out of the race to be the Senate Speaker.

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has withdrawn his candidature from the race to be the next Speaker of the Senate.

Speaking on Thursday, September 8, at the Senate chambers, the Clerk of the Senate said that Kalonzo withdrew his candidature in a letter to the Senate on Thursday morning.

The clerk said that seven candidates had shown interest in the race and upon the withdrawal of the Wiper boss, his name would not appear on the ballot.

"I want to draw to the attention of the senate and honourable senators that this morning Hon. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, by a letter reference WDM/SEM/GC 2022, withdrew his candidature for speaker of the senate and will not appear on the ballot paper," the clerk stated.

The former Vice President had been fronted by the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition party to run for the position.

The withdrawal of Kalonzo led to a walkout of Azimio-allied senators from the Senate chambers with the clerk calling the house to order.

The voting exercise for the new Speaker in the Senate nonetheless continued swiftly after the walkout by the Azimio senators.

Kenya Kwanza Alliance fronted former Kilifi governor Amason Kingi as their candidate for the position.

The voting for the Speaker is by secret ballot.
