An Azimio candidate has been elected as the Nairobi County Assembly Speaker.

Ken Ng'ondi of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition has been elected as the Nairobi County Assembly Speaker.

Ng'ondi garnered 68 votes in the second round of voting to clinch the position in an exercise held on Thursday, September 29, at the Nairobi County Assembly Chambers.

Kenya Kwanza candidate in the race, Hassan Robow, came in second with 55 votes.

In the first round, Ng'ondi had garnered 71 votes while Robow had 52 votes, forcing the exercise to enter the second round due to the two-thirds of total votes cast constitutional requirement.

Ng'ondi had previously served in the Assembly as the Deputy Speaker.

The county assembly has a total of 124 MCAs with 85 elected and 39 nominated.

Ng'ondi now takes over from his immediate predecessor, Benson Mutura.

The Orange Democratic Party (ODM), an Azimio affiliate party, on Thursday morning wished Ng'ondi well in the race before the voting exercise kicked off.

"We wish our Azimio Coalition candidates for the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Nairobi City County Assembly i.e., Ken Ng’ondi and Paul Kados Kiguathi respectively all the best. Our unity lies in our strength and together we shall make Nairobi work," ODM stated.
