The Bungoma senatorial by-election was occasioned by the resignation of ex-senator Moses Wetangula who went on to vie for the National Assembly speaker's seat.

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has announced that the Bungoma Senatorial by-election will be held on December 8, 2022.

The by-election was occasioned by the resignation of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula.

He resigned as Senator to vie for the Speaker's seat.

IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati While gazetting the by-election said:

"Following declaration of vacancy that occurred in the office of Member of the Senate for Bungoma County confirmed by the respective Speakers of the Senate vide a letter dated the26th September, 2022, there shall be a by-election for Member of the Senate for Bungoma County on Thursday, 8thDecember, 2022," he said.

"Each Political Party intending to participate in the by-elections shall submit the names of the persons contesting in a party primary and the date of the party primary on or before Thursday, 13th October, 2022."

Chebukati also gazetted the same date for by-elections in Ololmasani, Kyome/Thaana, Utawala, Mumias North and South Gem Wards in Narok, Kitui, Nairobi City, Kakamega and Siaya county assemblies.

The election in the said areas were postponed after some of the candidates died.

"Pursuant to Gazette Notice No. 8784 of 2022 Vol. CXXIV No. 144 published on the 26th July, 2022, there shall be byelections for Ololmasani, Kyome/Thaana, Utawala Mumias North and South Gem Wards in Narok, Kitui, Nairobi City, Kakamega and Siaya County Assemblies, respectively, on the 8th December, 2022."
