TikTok has introduced new features to help users take charge of their privacy and safety while using the platform.

In an announcement on Monday, June 16, TikTok revealed eight features designed to help users secure their accounts, manage the content they interact with, and ensure a safer overall experience on the app.

One of the key features allows users to choose between public and private profiles, giving them complete control over who can view their videos.

To boost account safety, TikTok offers a Security Checkup tool that enables users to review and adjust their security settings easily.

An added layer of protection is available through two-factor authentication and passkeys, which help prevent unauthorized logins by requiring confirmation of the user’s identity.

Users also have the power to influence what appears on their For You page.

They can set their interests, block certain keywords or hashtags, and even reset their feed for a fresh start. In addition, TikTok recommends checking out its Education Guide for more tips on tailoring content.

Messaging controls are another important privacy feature. Users can adjust their settings to decide who is allowed to send them direct messages.

Notably, messaging is automatically turned off for those under the age of 16. Others can choose whether to receive messages from everyone, friends only, or no one at all.

To support healthier screen habits, TikTok provides digital wellbeing tools, such as daily screen time caps and reminders to take breaks.

The app also includes accessibility features to support users with different needs.

These include adjustable font sizes, automatic captions, and video filters for those with photosensitivity.

TikTok is also compatible with screen readers for individuals using assistive technologies.

Another important feature is the Activity Centre, where users can view their watch history, previous searches, and comment records.

It also lets them monitor login history and detect any suspicious activity.

In the interest of transparency, TikTok has made it easier to follow up on reports.

Users can now see the status of complaints they’ve filed and check their account's current standing by heading to Settings, tapping on Support, and selecting Safety Centre.

TikTok noted that these updates are part of its ongoing efforts to give users more control over their time on the platform.

"Whether you're new to TikTok or use it regularly, it's important to protect your privacy and stay in control of your digital experience. With a range of customizable settings and built-in safety tools, TikTok empowers users to create a safer, more positive environment tailored to their needs," the announcement read.
