Telecommunications giant Safaricom PLC has announced a successful update on its M-Pesa system.
In a statement on Monday, September 22, Safaricom said all M-Pesa services had been fully restored following the maintenance exercise.
“Dear Customers, the scheduled M-PESA upgrade was successfully completed and all services fully restored.
“All M-PESA services are now available. We look forward to serving you better and providing you with seamless experiences,” Safaricom stated.
On Friday, the company announced that the system upgrade will temporarily interrupt M-Pesa services for three hours.

In a notice, Safaricom said the system maintenance will take place between 12:30 AM and 3:30 AM on Monday.
“To support this and meet our promise to offer always-on, safe, secure, and worry-free financial products and services, we will be conducting a scheduled system upgrade on Monday, 22ⁿᵈ September 2025 from 0:30 AM to 3:30 AM,” Safaricom stated.
The telecom noted that during the upgrade, all M-Pesa services, including airtime purchase, will be unavailable.
“During the maintenance, all M-Pesa services, including airtime purchases, shall be temporarily unavailable,” Safaricom said.
Further, the company explained that the maintenance exercise was scheduled past midnight to minimize inconvenience to M-Pesa customers.
Safaricom regularly conducts scheduled maintenance on its M-PESA services to enhance system efficiency and reliability.
The latest M-Pesa system upgrade has rolled out Fintech 2.0, a next-generation core platform designed to strengthen resilience, boost capacity, and drive advanced AI-powered innovation.
With the upgrade, M-Pesa’s capacity has increased from 4,500 to 6,000 transactions per second, with the ability to scale up to 12,000 as demand grows.
The system also now runs on an active-active architecture across multiple hosting sites, ensuring higher resilience and minimal service disruptions.
