The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Renson Ingonga has been elected the president of the Africa Prosecutors Association (APA).

In a statement by his office on Thursday, July 11, the DPP was unanimously elected to the role during the association's annual general meeting in Morocco.

"The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Mr. Renson M. Ingonga, OGW, has been unanimously elected as the president of the Africa Prosecutors Association (APA) during the association's 17th Annual Conference and General Meeting held in Marrakech, Morocco, on 10th July, 2024," the ODPP stated.

In his acceptance speech, Ingonga expressed his gratitude, even as he committed to advancing the organization's goals.

"I am humbled and excited not only about this role but also the responsibility that comes with it. Prosecutors have a significant role in the dispensation of justice and we are going to join hands on the continent to ensure this is discharged in a fair, ethical, clear and firm manner," the DPP remarked.

According to the ODPP, the election of Ingonga marked a significant milestone for Kenya as it underscored the country's active participation in international communities and addressed challenges faced by prosecutors while promoting justice.

The DPP will now take over from Egyptian Prosecutor General Counsellor Mohamed Shawqi Ayyad and his immediate responsibilities will include presiding over all association meetings.

APA was established in 2003 to bring together prosecutors from diverse African nations with the aim of enhancing cooperation, collaboration and capacity building in criminal justice.

The association also aims to empower prosecutors and promote the rule of law and human rights in Africa.
