Khalende on Tuesday stormed the UDA headquarters and declared himself the new secretary-general.

UDA Founding Members Association (UFMA) chairperson Joe Khalende has welcomed the move to kick out Cleophas Malala from the Secretary-General position.

In a statement on Friday, August 2, Khalende wished Malala well in his next endeavors after being removed from the UDA party SG position.

“The UDA Founding Members Association (UFMA) lauds the judicious decision by governing and policy making organ of the party National Executive Committee to remove disgraceful former Secretary General Cleophas Malala from the Party. We wish him well in his next step,” said Khalende.

The lawyer congratulated Hassan Omar for being appointed as the Interim UDA Secretary General and promised to support him in articulating President William Ruto’s agenda and delivering election promises.

At the same time, Khalende demanded an audit of the staff and procurement process done in the UDA party under Malala’s leadership.

He also demanded that action be taken against UDA party officials who participated in orchestrating security breaches in the party and those who mismanaged party resources.

“We demand a thorough audit of the staff and procurement processes done in the party last two years under the calamitous reign of Malala.

“Consequently, we demand swift and stern action against all the party officials that participated in orchestrating security breaches at the party, perpetrators of violence, saboteurs of Party's agenda and mismanagement of party's resources,” Khalende remarked.

Further, he asked the new UDA party officials to ensure the resumption of the stalled grassroots elections that will culminate in the election of substantive office bearers at all hierarchical levels.

Malala was removed from the UDA SG position on Friday morning during an NEC meeting that was convened by UDA chairperson Cecily Mbarire.

The former Kakamega Senator's removal from the role came after chaos were witnessed at the UDA party headquarters on Wednesday, July 31, after some of his supporters stormed the premises.

On Tuesday, a section of UDA members led by lawyer Khalende stormed the party's headquarters before the lawyer declared himself the new secretary general.
