DCI Mohamed Amin has come out to address speculations surrounding the prosecution of Rigathi Gachagua in relation to the June 25 protests.

Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Mohamed Amin has come out to address speculations surrounding the prosecution of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in relation to the protests held on June 25.

Speaking on Monday, June 30, Amin dismissed claims that the DCI had already summoned Gachagua for questioning.

However, the DCI boss was quick to assert that Gachagua is not above the law and would face prosecution if evidence linked him to unlawful activities during the protests.

"It is not true that we have summoned Rigathi Gachagua. However, I would like to point out very clearly that Rigathi Gachagua does not enjoy any immunity against prosecution.

"He is subject to the laws of the land and if in our investigations he is found to have been involved in any criminal activity, perpetrated any criminal activity, aided or abetted any criminal activity, then appropriate action will be taken against him," he said.

At the same time, Amin announced the arrest of 485 people over the chaos that was witnessed during the widespread protests.

He stated that 448 people had already been charged in court with 37 other suspects still in police custody pending their arraignment.

With regard to the charges, Amin revealed that some of the suspects were charged with murder.

Other suspects are facing charges relating to rape, gange rape, robbery with violence, incitement to violence, handling stolen goods among others.

"Intelligence and arrest records reveal that some individuals with specific instructions to attack public institutions and security installations were ferried in unmarked vehicles from particular areas that security agencies are currently looking into.

"Several firearms and police equipment were stolen during these attacks, and disturbingly, some of these weapons have already been used in violent robberies last night within the Naivasha Police Station area," he stated.
