West Mugirango Member of Parliament Stephen Mogaka has pledged to draft a motion to introduce mandatory counseling lessons in schools following the tragic death of a Form Four student at Sironga Girls' High School in Nyamira County.
In a statement on Saturday, September 28, Mogaka highlighted the growing concern over mental health in the country, which he described as a leading killer disease.
The lawmaker stated the motion would integrate counseling into the school curriculum as a preventive measure to address rising suicide cases among students.
"Mental health has become a leading killer disease and through Parliament, I will ensure that I draft a motion for counselling lessons to be included in the curriculum to reduce the suicide cases among the youth," Mogaka remarked.

According to Sironga Girls' High School Principal Jane Nyanumba, the student jumped from the second floor of a dormitory on Saturday morning, September 28.
The Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidate was rushed to Nyamira Level Five Hospital, where she was confirmed dead on arrival.
"At 5 a.m. when the rest of the girls were going to take a shower, she decided to jump from the second floor of the hostel. She fell down and hit her head and we took her to Nyamira Level Five Hospital where she was confirmed dead on arrival," Nyanumba told the press.
Nyamira South Deputy County Commissioner Florence Obunga disclosed that investigations into the incident have kicked off, noting that the girl used to keep to herself and she did not leave behind any suicide note.
"She sustained injuries at the back of her head. We are told that she used to keep to herself. We have been able to peruse through her books, and we have not been able to get any note left behind," she remarked.
