Deputy President William Ruto’s tussle with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has escalated with the former urging Members of County Assembly to push for amendments in the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report.

Odinga has been adamant that the BBI report should be passed as it is, while Ruto holds the view that some clauses need to be amended before the document is passed through consensus.

Last week, Odinga announced that the collection of BBI referendum signatures will start this week, effectively closing the door for any amendments.

Ruto Implores MCAs to Push for BBI Amendments

In what appears to be a counter move, the DP met a delegation of MCAs from Wajir County and implored them to push for amendments in order t improve the BBI document.

“County Assemblies must work together and push for progressive engagements around the Building Bridges Initiative so that we can build a consensus on the report. They must shun a forced yes-no campaign that threatens to be retrogressive to the country.

“A divisive referendum process cannot be used to achieve a united country. We must at the moment prioritize the health of our people and focus on countering the effects of Covid-19.
