Machakos University has been closed indefinitely following an unrest among students at the Machakos-based institution.
In a memo on Wednesday, December 7, the university's Vice Chancellor Prof. Lucy Irungu asked students to vacate the university's premises with immediate effect.
“Due to the evolving insecurity situation around the University and the ongoing students’ demonstrations, a Special Meeting convened on December 7 resolved that in the interest of the Security of Staff and Students, the University be closed with immediate effect,” Irungu stated.
Prof. Irungu stated that further communication following the indefinite closure of the institution will be made in due course.
The unrest by students at the university follows the death of a student of the institution who was allegedly shot by a police officer during a demonstration.

The student died while receiving treatment at Machakos Level 5 Hospital.
The students engaged police officers in running battles in the better part of Tuesday as they decried an increasing level of insecurity around the institution.
The officer linked with the shooting of the student has already been arrested.
His arrest came after two other police officers in Machakos were arrested for allegedly attacking and robbing two Machakos University students.
The officers, who was in plain clothes, attacked the students while they headed to their rented quarters in the wee hours of Monday morning, December 5.
