Four people are feared dead after a goldmine collapsed at Khayega village in Ikolomani Sub-county, Kakamega county.

12 people were at the goldmine when the tragedy occurred. Of the 12 people, 8 were rescued while the four remain trapped at the time of going to press.

Kakamega county commissioner John Ondego confirmed the tragedy.

The pit is said to have collapsed Thursday morning at about 1 am as the miners continued with their work.

Those rescued were admitted to the Mukumu mission hospital with injuries. Reports indicate they are in stable condition.

Odengo said swift efforts have been made to rescue those trapped. He said they believe they could be alive.

Gold mining is one of the economic activities being conducted in Kakamega county.

The mining activity has however been marked with tragedies from time to time.

The activity being risky has become life-threatening because of inadequate and relevant tools that could aid the mining activity.
