Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Chairman Wafula Chebukati clarified that no impeached leader can run for elective office.
Speaking at Bomas of Kenya on Wednesday, December 30 2020, Chebukati said the law will be followed in clearing candidates for by-elections.
His remarks have blocked former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu who had sought to make a come back in politics after he was ousted in the Mt Kenya county.
Chebukati said that IEBC will rely on recommendations from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, Commission for University Education and security agencies.

He maintained that the electoral body must adhere to constitutional stipulations to ensure that public officer holders meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution on Leadership and Integrity.
The EACC said all persons offering themselves as independent candidates or seeking party nominations for election must meet the integrity threshold under Chapter 6 of the Constitution.
The commission said it would not clear persons who have been removed from office or impeached on grounds of violating the integrity chapter of the constitution.
Waititu was impeached as Kiambu governor on January 29, 2020, on charges of violation of the Constitution of Kenya 2010, crimes under the National Law and abuse of office/ gross Misconduct.
