Former Kisii Governor James Ongwae has been appointed to government months after ditching the ODM party to work with President William Ruto's Kenya Kwanza.

The Former Governor has now been appointed the chairman of the Universal Service Advisory Council (USAC).

Ongwae will serve in the role for three years.

In a gazette notice dated November 15, 2023, ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo Ongwae's appointment takes effect immediately.

Owalo at the same time appointed members of the the advisory council.

They include Patrick Muriithi, Dr Amos Omollo, Lily Koech, Francis Gitau, Joy Mutuma, Dr Ferdinand Nyongesa, Benjamin Rop, and Elizabeth Limagur.

Ongwae's appointment comes after months of job hunting in the Kenya Kwanza government.

He is among the leaders who applied for the Chief Administrative Positions but did not make the final list of the appointed persons.

Ongwae was the pioneer governor of Kisii County. He served between 2013 to 2022 having been elected on an ODM Party ticket.

He ditched the ODM party after the  August 9, 2022 elections in which he backed Azimio Leader Raila Odinga for the Presidency.

USAC provides strategic policy guidance for the administration and implementation of the Universal Service Fund (USF).

The USF was set up in 2013 to support widespread access, capacity building, and innovation in information and communications technology services.

The council had been without members for three years.

The government on May 9 this year advertised the positions of chairperson and eight board members.

"Applications are invited from suitably qualified Kenyans wishing to be considered for nomination to the post of chairperson or member of the Universal Service Advisory Council,” stated the PSC advertisement.
