Education CS Prof George Magoha told Parliamentary Committee the Covid-19 situation is not going to change and children are safer in schools than at home.

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha stated ruled out a January opening saying the time to reopen schools “is now”.

CS Magoha argued that even if the government were to wait until January 2021, he told MPs Wednesday, the Covid-19 situation is not going to change and children are safer in schools than at home.

The CS was speaking to the members of the National Assembly Committee on Education where he said the new opening dates will be announced soon.

“Don’t put me into a corner to give you the dates, what I can tell you for now is that I will issue the school calendar and dates will be announced in due course,” he said.

Recommendations

Prof Magoha said primary and secondary schools will reopen starting with classes sitting national examinations.

The recommendations of the education task force committee on Covid-19 factored in all issues affecting schools’ reopening.

The task force had proposed a reopening date of between October 5 and October 19. He also said the new school calendar has been drawn in a way that ensures 2020 is not a lost year.
