Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha has announced that the government will soon commence random drug tests on students in abid to eradicate social ills and unrest in schools.

Speaking on Thursday at Ogande Girls High School in Homa Bay County, CS Magoha noted that the testing will be done in collaboration with the Health Ministry.

According to Magoha, the increased cases of unrest in schools could be due to smuggling of drugs into the institutions by a section of students.

He further noted that those found to have positive results will face severe punishment including expulsion.

“We’ll soon randomly visit schools and conduct blood tests. Any student found that they are on active drug abuse will be expelled.

“The government must end the nonsense of students becoming unruly and destroying property built through taxpayer money…Learners should be strictly monitored even if they are going to the toilet to avoid any security loophole in schools,” Magoha said.

In addition, Magoha directed school heads countrywide not to admit students expelled from other schools over gross misconduct.

The orders were issued following a series of arson cases that have rocked learning institutions since reopening earlier this year.
