Weatherman Explains Why Parts of Country Are Experiencing Heavy Rainfall in July

The Kenya Meteorological Department has disclosed why some parts of the country are currently experiencing heavy rainfall.

In an update on Sunday, July 7, moments after cautioning Kenyans of heavy downpour, the weatherman stated that it was not unusual to experience rains in July.

The Met Department explained that rains were as a result of the interaction between cold air from central and eastern regions and warm moist air from the west.

"It is not unusual to experience rains in July in Kenya. This occurs when cold air from central and eastern regions, including Nairobi, interacts with warm, moist air from the west. The warm air rises over the cold air, leading to heavy advective rains.

"As we approach August and early September, this interaction can cause hailstorms, which are often mistaken for snow. This phenomenon is similar to the formation of a warm front. When active weather systems from the west push warm, moist air towards these cooler regions, these weather patterns are expected," Kenya Met stated.

On Sunday, the Met department warned of continued moderate to heavy rainfall in many parts of the country.

The weatherman disclosed that rainfall will be expected over the highlands west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria basin, the Rift Valley and North-western Kenya region.

These regions include the counties of Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo,Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, West Pokot, Turkana and Samburu.

"Continued moderate to heavy rainfall is expected over several parts of the country as shown in the forecast maps for Sunday, 7th, and Monday, 8th July 2024," Kenya Met explained.
