Former First Lady Margaret Kenyatta on Monday, July 15, graced the Global First Ladies Academy Programme in New York, USA. 

The VIP dinner event, organized by the Global First Ladies Alliance in collaboration with Columbia Mailman School of Public Health, provided an opportunity for both current and former First Ladies to engage with critical partners dedicated to promoting health and development in their respective countries.

Margaret gave her account of reducing high rates of maternal and child deaths in Kenya through the Beyond Zero initiative including running in marathons to raise awareness.

"Leveraging my multiple roles as First Lady was made possible because of the ripple effect of the solid partnerships and friends we made along the way. It demonstrated how collective efforts towards a shared destiny can bring transformative change," she stated. 


Beyond Zero was conceived in June 2013 when Margaret committed to heighten advocacy efforts aimed at reducing preventable maternal and child deaths, as well as elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis.

On 24th January 2014, the Beyond Zero campaign was launched with the Former First Lady as its founder and patron.

Beyond Zero has donated at least one mobile clinic to all the 47 counties in Kenya. The mobile clinics routinely provide a myriad of free services and health education messages.
