The advanced near-infrared tool will be at key entry points and PPB regional offices.

The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) has acquired an advanced Near Infrared (NIR) technology, the Pillscan to strengthen its efforts in safeguarding drug quality.

In a statement via X on Monday, July 29, PPB said it acquired the NIR from the Mission of Essential Medicines and Supplies.

The board will use the Pillscan for screening medical production at key entry points and at its regional offices.

“Provided by the Mission of Essential Medicines and Supplies, this new tool will be used for on-site screening of medical products at PPB regional offices and key entry points,” read the statement in part.

PPB noted that the new technology will complement the existing quality control measures on the board and enhance the detection of sub-standard medical products.

“Complementing the PPB's existing quality control measures, the NIR technology will enhance the detection of sub-standard and falsified medical products,” PPB stated.

The board mentioned that a six-day training was conducted for PPB staff, county pharmacists, and KEMSA personnel to maximize the impact of this new tool.

“By incorporating NIR technology into its operations, the PPB aims to bolster its surveillance of the Kenyan pharmaceutical market and protect public health,” the board added.
