Five police officers who were arrested in connection with the escape of Collins Jumaisi, a murder suspect, have been released on a Sh200,00 bond each.

The five, Ronald Babo, Evans Kipkirui, Mollent Achieng, Zachary Nyabuto and Gerald Mutuku, appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Martha Nanzushi on Wednesday before she granted them bond on Thursday, August 22.

The prosecution had sought to detain the officers for 14 days, but Nanzushi ruled that there were no compelling reasons to hold them any longer.

She, however, ordered the suspects to report to the investigating officer twice a week.

According to the Office of The Director Of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) the five were persons of interest in the escape of Jumaisi and 12 other suspects.

"The officers are persons of interest in the case that involves the disappearance of 12 Eritrean nationals and Collins Jumaisi, the prime suspect in the murder of several people whose bodies were recovered in Kware, a low-income residential area in Nairobi," the ODPP stated on Wednesday.

Jumaisi and the 12 Eritreans escaped from Gigiri Police Station on Tuesday, August 20, leading to the interdiction of eight police officers.

Addressing the media on Tuesday, acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli stated that preliminary investigations indicated that insiders aided suspects to escape the station.

“Our preliminary investigations indicate that the escape was aided by insiders considering that officers were deployed accordingly to guard the station.

“Consequently, I have interdicted eight officers who were on duty last night among them the Gigiri Sub County Police Commander, OCS Gigiri Station, Duty Officer, Duty NCO, Station Guards, and Report Office personnel,” Masengeli remarked.

On Thursday, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) promised a 'significant cash reward' for information leading to the apprehension of Jumaisi.

"A significant cash reward will be provided to anyone with credible information leading to the suspect's arrest. The suspect is from Shiru sub-location, Shaviringa location, Hamisi sub-county in Vihiga County," DCI stated.
