Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang'wa has come out to explain Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's absence at a church event presided over by President William Ruto in Nyeri County.
In a statement on Sunday, September 15, Thang'wa revealed that Gachagua was representing President Ruto at a different event at that time.
The lawmaker added that the event could not be concluded early enough for the deputy president to join the president, resulting in his absence.
“To clarify misinformation from political spin masters and the masterminds behind the plans to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua: Both the President and Deputy President were expected to attend services at the Kirinyaga and Nyeri churches.
“The President was specifically scheduled to officially open the Baricho Parish rectory, but Rigathi stood in for him. The Deputy President had also planned to join the President in Nyeri after representing him in Kirinyaga, but time constraints made it impossible,” Thang'wa remarked.

His explanation followed after State House advisor Moses Kuria shared a photo of an empty chair next to the President at the event held at the African Independent Pentecostal Church of Africa (AIPCA) Central West Archdiocese in Nyeri.
Kuria captioned the photo, "This is the last time this seat will be vacant, I swear."
However, while attending the centenary celebrations of Our Lady of Sorrows Baricho Catholic Parish in Kirinyaga County, the deputy president explained that he could not leave the event midway.
“I was hurrying to attend another church in Nyeri when I saw there was a cake. I wondered whether an event without eating a cake is complete. So I decided to wait for the cake,” Gachagua remarked.
