Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is facing impeachment due to allegations of acquiring over Ksh 5.2 billion in assets through corrupt practices during his two years in office.  

The impeachment motion, filed by Kibwezi West MP Mutuse Eckomas Mwengi on Tuesday, October 1, outlines claims of money laundering, economic crimes, and gross misconduct, including using family members as proxies for illicit acquisitions.

The motion alleges that Gachagua and his proxies use the properties and companies to conceal proceeds of crime and corruption, and launder money. 

The following are hotels, properties, and companies linked to Gachagua;

Hotels

According to the motion, Gachagua owns four hotels, namely Treetops Hotel, Outspan Hotel, Olive Gardens Hotel and Vipingo Beach Resort.

The DP is said to have bought Outspan Hotel in November 2023 through Crystal Kenya Limited which is said to be his proxy company.

The motion showed that the hotel was bought from Aberdare Safari Hotels for Ksh 535 million.

"The Directors of Crystal Kenya Limited are the sons of Gachagua, namely Kevin Gachagua and Keith Ikinu. Sometimes, in August 2024, Gachagua publicly admitted that his family had acquired this property," the motion read.

Additionally, the motion states that Kevin and Keith acquired Treetops Hotel in November 2023 with Gachagua admitting that the family had acquired the hotel.

The motion also noted that Gachagua, through his proxies, also acquired Olive Gardens Hotel and Vipingo Beach Resort in Kilifi.

Properties

The motion also listed a number of properties allegedly owned by Gachagua including a parcel of land in Mathira where he has allegedly constructed a helicopter landing facility.

The deputy president is also said to have bought some 40 acres of land in Kakuret, Nyeri County and 80 acres of land in Meru County.

According to the motion, Gachagua also owns a dairy farm in Nyandarua County.

Companies

Additionally, the motion listed 22 companies linked to Gachagua which were established between April 2001 and November 2023.

The companies are Spirit Way Limited, Fortis Vis Group Limited, Grand Bypass Apartments Limited and Kuruwitu Properties Limited.

Others are The Anansi Collective, Biovet Limited, Calvary Creed International Limited, Cosmere Venture Limited, Crystal Kenya Limited, and Delta Merchants Limited.

Gachagua is also linked to Vipingo Beach Resort Limited, Rigathi Gachagua Foundation, Dorcas Rigathi Foundation, Heartland Supplies Limited, Karandi Farm Limited and Morani Manufacturers Limited.

Other companies linked to the DP are Mothers of the Land Limited, Pioneer Medical Limited, Ridor Furniture Mart Limited, Royal Crimson Ventures Limited, Technical Supplies and Services Limited, and Wamunyoro Investments Limited.
