So on Tuesday, I will be voting No - Tetu MP Geoffrey Wandeto.

A section of lawmakers from the expansive Mt. Kenya region, who had initially backed the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, have now reversed their stance.

Speaking to the press on Thursday, October 3, the lawmakers—Tetu MP Geoffrey Wandeto, Kieni MP Njoroge Wainaina, Nyeri Women Representative Rahab Mukami, and her Embu counterpart Pamela Njoki—explained that they changed their position after consulting with their constituents.

Wandeto noted that his constituents do not see the impeachment of the deputy president as a priority.

"They do not see it as a priority. They think there are other priorities that we should be focusing on. And as representatives of the people, I think it beholds upon us to listen to our people and do what they have asked us. So on Tuesday, I will be voting No," the Tetu MP remarked.

On his part, Wainaina declared that Members of Parliament did not have a final say and, therefore, he would go with the voice of his constituents.

"I want to make a personal commitment that what the people of Kieni will say is what I will go with. It has never been that MPs have the final say according to the constitution," the Kieni MP stated.

Nyeri Women Representative Mukami maintained that after reading the impeachment motion against Gachagua, she saw it as a matter that could be solved between the DP and the president.

"After reading the impeachment motion, I saw it as a matter the DP and the president can sit down and solve because Kenya is greater than all of us. Nyeri people have said they don't want the DP to be impeached," Mukami explained.

On her part, Embu Women Representative Njoki stated that signing the impeachment motion was not a guarantee of supporting it during voting, adding that the voice of her people would guide her in the voting.

Their remarks came hours before Friday, October 4, public hearings across the country regarding the ouster of Gachagua.

Gilgil MP Martha Wangari is also one of the lawmakers who have changed hearts on the impeachment motion against the DP, stating the grounds for the ouster are weak.

On Thursday, Gachagua's move to block his impeachment received a blow after the High Court declined to suspend the motion.
