Parties to the International Criminal Court (ICC) on Friday elected British human rights lawyer Karim Khan as the new prosecutor for a nine-year term starting on June 16.
Khan represented Deputy President William Ruto and former Head of Public Service Francis Muthaura, as the lead lawyer when they faced charges of crimes against humanity relating to the 2008 post-election violence at ICC.
Mr. Khan garnered 72 votes in the second round of voting, defeating Irishman Fergal Gaynor who scored 42 votes.
The veteran lawyer will become the first European Prosecutor for the ICC in its 20-year history.
Khan will now succeed the outgoing ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda.
