This event highlights that women can lead, confirming their vital role in our Republic - President Ruto. 

Lieutenant Colonel Faith Mwagandi made history on Sunday, October 20, during Mashujaa Day, becoming the first woman to lead a Guard of Honour in the Republic of Kenya. 

"During today’s Mashujaa Day 2024 celebrations, a notable highlight will be the presence of the Guard of Honor (GoH) commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Faith Mwagandi, marking a historic moment as she becomes the first female senior officer to lead a GoH at a national event," Kenya Defence Forces said in a statement.

President William Ruto inspected the Guard of Honour in Kwale Stadium and acknowledged the historic event in his speech. 

"This morning, we had another historic event. For the first time in our nation's history, a female soldier, Lieutenant Colonel Faith Mwagandi, led the Guard of Honour," Ruto announced. 

The President added, "I congratulate Kenyans for warmly welcoming us to Mashujaa in Kwale, and all leaders here, especially Governor Fatuma Achani. This event highlights that women can lead, including Muslim women, confirming their vital role in our Republic."

Mwagandi's trailblazing career began when she joined the KDF in 2007. She then made history as the first female Warship Commander in East Africa, taking command of the Kenya Navy Ship (KNS) Shujaa from 2019 to 2022.
