Speaking outside the Karen Hospital on Sunday, October 20, Gachagua claimed that there were two attempts on his life.

He said the first attempt to assassinate him involved having an undercover agent poison his food.

"On the 30th of August, undercover security agents entered my room in Kisumu and one of them tried to poison my food but we detected it and we were able to escape the scheme. I was supposed to be killed through food poisoning," he said.

Gachagua noted that the second attempt to take him out happened in Nyeri where National Intelligence Service (NIS) operatives were sent to poison food meant for him and the Kikuyu Council of Elders.

"on the 3rd of September, another team from the NIS came to Nyeri and tried to poison food that was meant for me and the Kikuyu Council of Elders. I did report this matter to the NIS and the officers who were assigned to my office, I asked them to leave because I felt I was not safe," he alleged.
