The suspect withdrew Ksh 3.7 million from the unsuspecting tourist who met him online.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested a Kenyan man accused of robbing a foreigner.

The officers, who are attached to the Nairobi Region Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, acted on a plaint from a Greek national who fell into the trap of the suspect.

According to the DCI, the female Greek tourist landed in Kenya on August 5 and was to meet the suspect, who has been identified as Okello Oyugi.

The two had made a connection via social media, with Oyugi hiding his identity; he called himself "Jeremiah John".

Upon their meetup, they proceeded to the Maasai Game Park, this as Oyugi plotted against the woman.

"The victim, a Greek national, had arrived in Nairobi on August 5, 2025. The following day, accompanied by his tour guide together with an acquaintance he had met online, introducing himself as “Jeremiah John”—he set off for the Maasai Mara," partly read the DCI's statement.

It is during their expedition at Maasai Mara that "Jeremiah" robbed the foreigner.

The DCI's report indicates that the suspect stole the tourist's three debit cards, a mobile phone, and a wristwatch.

Using the debit cards, the suspect withdrew 25,000 Euros (equivalent to KSh 3.7 million) from the tourist’s bank account.

The sleuths managed to trace the suspect to his hideout.

Forensic investigations uncovered his real identity.

He used the loot to purchase a motorbike; the DCI officers arrested him and recovered mobile phones, cash in US dollars, and a wristwatch.

"Through forensic analysis, detectives unmasked the suspect as Kenas Okello Oyugi, who was trailed and arrested at his hideout. Upon his arrest, detectives recovered mobile phones, a Seiko Crystal wristwatch, Kshs 54,050, and cash in US dollars. They also seized a brand-new Tour Trek bicycle, believed to have been purchased with the stolen funds," the DCI said.

The suspect was booked at Nairobi's Central Police Station, where he is being processed for arraignment.
