Ruto and Gachagua fell out two years into their term with allies of the President accusing the former DP of undermining the government

President William Ruto took a subtle swipe at his former principal assistant during the swearing-in ceremony of Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.

In his address at KICC on Friday, November 1, Ruto, without mentioning the name of Rigathi Gachagua accused the former Deputy President of being silent on government programmes.

He expressed that Gachagua had abandoned him in defending government programmes.

Therefore, he called upon Kindiki to help him in detailing various initiatives that the government was undertaking for Kenyans.

Some of the initiatives he referred to was on health such as the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and the new funding model for universities.

"My dear friend Prof Kindiki, I need your voice. I need your intellect and that of the members of the Cabinet to profile the things we are doing. I have almost become a lonely voice in the executive, especially in the Presidency in speaking about our programmes and projects," he said.

"You are eloquent my brother and intelligent. I am confident that you will do that which I have missed in the last two years."

Ruto and Gachagua fell out two years into their term with allies of the President accusing the former DP of undermining the government.

Notably, among the impeachment grounds against the DP was gross misconduct which constituted his stance against Cabinet initiatives such as the cleaning of Nairobi River. The exercise involved the demolition of buildings around the Nairobi River.

Meanwhile, Gachagua has refuted the allegations and accused the President of plotting to impeach him because he was the only person in government who could stand up against unpopular government policies.

“I am the only man in Cabinet who can stand against the President. Nobody else can tell him off," the former DP alleged.

Gachagua is fighting his impeachment in court.
