The Ministry of Health has shut down Omnicare Medical, also known as Body by Design, following the tragic death of Lucy Wambui, who passed away after undergoing cosmetic surgery at the facility.
In a statement dated November 2, Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni announced that the closure followed an investigation by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) into the facility’s practices.
According to Muthoni, the investigation revealed that the Nairobi-based facility was operating below the required medical standards.
"The findings revealed serious non-compliance with medical institution regulations, especially under Sections 4 and 15 of the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Act (Cap 253). The inspection found that the facility was operating below the required medical standards, failing to meet patient safety regulations crucial for protecting the health and well-being of patients.
"In response, KMPDC has ordered the immediate closure of the facility to ensure public safety until all necessary corrective actions are implemented to guarantee compliance with safety standards," Muthoni remarked.

The PS further noted that an investigation is underway regarding the staff involved in Wambui's procedure.
"The council is examining the extent of culpability and determining the appropriate actions to ensure accountability and prevent future incidents of malpractice," Muthoni added.
On Friday, November 1, the Health PS disclosed that a team had been deployed to the Body by Design clinic to establish facts following the death of Wambui and promised action if acts of negligence were established.
At the same time, Muthoni warned Kenyans to be wary of medical facilities that offer cosmetic procedures.
"To safeguard public health, we encourage citizens to verify the credentials of healthcare providers and facilities. Please confirm the status of medical practitioners by sending a free SMS to 20547 using the format: P#Doctor's Name, or to check a hospital, H#Hospital Name," Muthoni stated.
