The chiefs have also been given a target for the monthly exercises.

The Ministry of Interior has directed chiefs to conduct monthly tree-planting exercises across the country.

In a statement dated Monday, November 4, Interior PS Raymond Omollo announced that the chiefs would lead in the exercises scheduled for the first Friday of every month.

According to the plans, the government aims to have 1 million trees planted during the nationwide exercise.

Therefore, chiefs were instructed to mobilise community members to participate in the monthly exercise.

The latest directive by the government is in line with President William Ruto's plan for 15 billion trees.

"The Chiefs Climate Action Day has officially launched. Presided over by PS Dr Raymond Omollo, this initiative empowers our 3,950 Chiefs nationwide to drive grassroots climate action," read the statement in part.

"On the first Friday of each month, Chiefs will mobilize communities to plant and grow 1 million trees, moving us closer to the Presidential goal of 15 billion trees by 2032."

Since coming into office, President William Ruto has been pushing for activities to restore the environment and deal with the effects of climate change.

Tree planting was one of the initiatives launched in his first year in office.

Subsequently, the government gazetted Mazingira Day as a public holiday slated for October 10 to enable Kenyans to participate in tree planting.
