President William Ruto has allocated Ksh2.7 billion to address frequent accidents in Lake Victoria.
Speaking in Kisumu on Tuesday, November 26, the president said the government would also set up a rescue and coordination centre to ensure that accidents are attended to on time.
"Because there have been major accidents, and we lose a lot of people because of facilities that are not adequate because of some of the infrastructure that is not proper, we have decided to do Lake Victoria rescue and coordination center.
"We are putting Ksh2.7 billion to make sure that any accident in Lake Victoria is attended to in record time so that we can better support the whole ecosystem there and make sure that this is going forward," Ruto stated.

Boat accidents on Lake Victoria, particularly around Kisumu, are often attributed to mechanical failures, poor safety equipment, and adverse weather conditions.
A notable case involved four Coast Guard officers who narrowly escaped after their boat capsized at Ndere Island on August 30, 2024.
The officers were on patrol in the water body when their vessel developed mechanical complications, causing sudden water ingress.
According to KCGS, the victims were on their way to the Kisumu station coming from Siaya and Homabay when the accident occurred.
Their colleagues collaborated with the officers from BMU and KWS at Ndere Islands to save them in an eight-hour mission.
"All officers are currently receiving medical attention and are in stable condition. The swift coordination among the BMUs and agencies involved exemplified the highest standards of maritime safety, making sure that the officers were rescued," KCGS said in a statement.
